West Bromwich Albion 1 - Charlton Athletic 1
Brendan Clegg:We got suckered there. Dominated most of it, we frustrated by their doggedness and perhaps our caution or trying to walk it into the net, but having got the goal by Styles ‘having a go’ and scoring a worldie we really should’ve seen it out. I thought the lineup was harsh on Whitwell unless he had a knock and I thought we missed his guile. We ran the game first half but had little cutting edge - didn’t always move it quickly enough, and we were a bit predictable. Part of that was Tunde, a surprising starter who I think was utterly predictable as a young Spanish inverted winger starting his first game in the championship; neat and tidy, brushed off too easily in parts or a little hesitant, came inside every time instead of going wide. He’ll get better but he didn’t hurt them enough. There was nothing the other way though. At half time Rabbi gave us another dimension and looked more up to speed but we couldn’t open them up and probably ‘overplayed’ or didn’t cross early enough when we need to trust Morgan will get on the end of things. Styles hit a peach but Charlton pegged us back with a goal becoming all too familiar… we defend the first phase and lose the rebound. People will flag Galves and this is fair BUT it’s not the first time he’s looked far ropier with Rabbi in front of him. We still should have dealt with it. I thought our other subs were late and wrong - would like to have seen Morgan and Heggebø together as The Horn was once again busy but ineffective. Our lack of deadline day striker is a bit too obvious to poke at. Overall a good window and, make no mistake, we bossed this. It wasn’t like Mason’s games where we never felt in control. We need to sharpen up, bed players in and vary it up a bit but the wins will come - we’ve been the best team for more than 50% of each match we’ve played so far.
