Brendan Clegg:
Well the best I can make of that is it serves as a reminder that if we didn't pick our most reliable 11 and if we drop by even 5% then we'll get beaten by the worst team in the league. Wednesday obviously got a bounce from the news before kick-off about their takeover and no points deduction but we were shocking.
With Molumby and Phillips rested it was an opportunity for Bostock and Gilchrist to come in. Given their minutes it was always going to be tough for them to get going but that also sent a subtle signal to everyone else - whatever any coach says, this game doesn't matter and we are already on the beach.
I'm not going to say lots - there isn't lots to say. We were the better team to begin with but were absolutely woeful with our early opportunities and situations - Heggebo again showing that for all his bustle and effort he is criminally careless... he should have laid a goal on for Bostock but his pass was awful... he shot when others were in much better positions.
Elsewhere there was a noticeable lack of running back and we were slow, ponderous, unadventurous... the kind of "let's give the ball to Mowatt all the time and make him look like he's running the game but we go nowhere' type of display we saw so often under Mason. Again you could see why Molumby was trusted more on the right out of position than the other options.
The two goals we concede, both from set piece second-phases just show how much you do need a Phillips in the team - we lost the first ball for both and never recovered. I saw a stat a half time - we only won 80% of aerial duels - that said everything.
Mozza changed it at half time but it stayed loose, sloppy and I don't think we had a shot until the 80th minute. After Grant nicked one back from a crap Price free-kick that most Sunday League teams will deal with, we did look a bit lively - I thought Dike had a good shout for a penalty when he was lining up an Anichibe roll and was clearly being dragged - and whilst the subs didn't really impact the game I thought young Mandey looked interesting... a bit of a unit.
I'm sure Mozza is annoyed to lose the undefeated run but we move on to next season. He's deservedly got the job after an incredible run when we looked doomed, getting us to actually be enjoyable to watch again. I have some tentative hope that he, and we, are going to have a much better campaign next season and we've got an opportunity to change things up. He needs to have far more influence on signings than the previous few coaches - hopefully that'll be the case. I'm a big fan of getting it done early so that we can start planning from straight after the game today!
- O'Leary - 6 No real chance for the goals and made a great save. For our budget, I think he's earned a deal and I'd be offering. 7 for the season.
- Imray - 6 Didn't fully go for it but was still one of our better players. For me he would be our number 1 priority signing with a fit Williams as backup. 7 for the season.
- Gilchrist - 5 Was going to be rusty but just isn't physically imposing enough... feel like we might need to move him on. 5 for the season.
- Campbell - 6 Was one of our better players on the ball but does need a big monster alongside him. 7 for the season overall as he's really come on, possibly would have been an 8 had he played CB for the majority.
- Styles - 6 I thought he had a shocking opening but got better. 8 for the season purely for reliability and consistency.
- Bostock - 5 Struggled to impact it, didn't look after the ball well enough. 5 for the season - looks like he needs a loan and to fill out a bit, has looked physically not ready despite the odd good moment and fearlessness.
- Diakite - 6 Okay - didn't dominate it as much. 7 for the season, clearly overlooked/not trusted but has been immense with a run of games.
- Mowatt - 5 Bored me to tears, not dynamic. 6 for the season - if we could move him on I would, we need better athleticism in there and although he's put a shift in these last few games it's just not there and we have to play at his tempo.
- Price - 6 Loads of running still, moments of terrible quality either in the pass or that chest volley which a this level is a massive chance for anyone with composure. 6 for the season - Mozza managed to get him back on track but I still find him immensely frustrating.
- Heggebo - 5 Battled away but the quality is nowhere near. Hopefully he just needs a long rest. 5 for the season - hasn't scored in yonks, seems to give away fouls all the time.... he's going to need support next year.
- Maja - 5 Odd good touch and couldn't shift his feet with one decent opportunity. 5 for the season... he can still finish and he was never rapid but his legs/knees look like they'll never recover. I think he'll get offers better than he's worth, and therefore it's time to part.
- Dike - 6 Put himself about. 6 for the season after a long road back and minutes. All squads need this type of striker... I would offer him a deal on reduced teams and based on appearances. I think he might also get offers elsewhere.
- Bany - 5 Looked rusty as to be expected. 4 for the season... he hasn't been fit enough.
- Grant - 6 nicked a goal and ran about. 6 for the season - I have never been a fan and pre-Coberan it was strong dislike. I think over the last 2 years the penny dropped that he'll never get a better club or contract than we gave him and his pace and running were useful. I can see the temptation to offer him a deal on reduced terms but I'd like us to aim higher... mid level championship is his ceiling.
- Wallace - Didn't get a kick. 6 for the season - you could never fault his effort or leadership even when his form wasn't there. Unless he wants a very short deal on vastly reduced terms and a tentative move into coaching, he's another we need to release.
And the rest that I can remember for the season...
- Griffiths - 5 Too many bloopers. I still maintain we win that Wrexham game with O'Leary in goal. Isn't a kid anymore... time to cash in if we can.
- Wildsmith - 4 Not good enough for this level.
- Bielik - 5 Has got leadership qualities but is slow and a crock. Move on if we can.
- Mepham - 4 Probably the biggest disappointment for me. Should be a Rolls Royce... looked like he was going through the motions.
- Taylor - 5 The effort and pride were there but the legs were gone. Was a sitting duck too often.
- Molumby - 7 Will be very senior for us next season. His form under Mozza was arguably his best ever. As long as he doesn't get carried away with himself, very reliable and the Diakite partnership really clicked.
- Jamma - 5 Has clearly got ability but has got miles to learn effort-wise.
- MJ - 6 Was our best player by some distance until the injury and yet was dicked about... and... would Mozza trust him to put everything on the line for every minute? I'm not sure.
- Mandey - 5 Would like to see how he gets on in pre season
- Whitwell - 5 I liked how he carries the ball and drives forward... maybe needs another loan
Enjoy the summer everyone. Thanks for reading. Up the Jimmy Mozza's baggies!
