West Bromwich Albion 2 - Wrexham 2
Ancient Baggie:Well it's a point and the undefeated run carries on but can't help feeling it's a game we should have taken all three from. Solid first half and good value for the 2-0 lead even if we got a little fortunate with the first goal. Once they got a goal back straight after half time we looked a bit vulnerable. I don't think our wide men helped us at all Price seems to do lots of pointless running and chasing lost causes but doesn't seem able to close down quickly enough when we're defending. For me Jimoh-Aloba offers very little either going forward or defending, if we have nothing better than him on the bench then we better hope Wallace gets fit quickly. Wrexham are not a bad side and their first goal was really good move and finish but none of our players covered themselves in glory for their second. After that it was crying out for someone to come off the bench and make an impact but unfortunately that wasn't the case, although Dike probably should have won it at the end. We could really do with getting something at Blackburn on Monday. COYB Brendan Clegg:A bit of a nervy one in the end and frustrating to draw after going 2-0 up and dominating the first half but overall it was a good point, keeps the run going and in my opinion although Mozza is still green as a coach and should’ve tweaked things sooner, he did at least make in game changes that sorted us out and we might’ve won it at the death. With the lineup, the call was made to stick with Griffiths in goal after a clean sheet and solid performance. Wallace being out was a blow with Jamma coming in and our bench looking thin. First half we were pretty good. We won the midfield battle. Wrexham were long ball or nothing and we dealt with it easily- I don’t recall a shot on target for them. I thought we were less fluid going forward with Price and Jamma too narrow at times, and I thought we lacked composure or good decision-making with Heggebø more guilty than most. But we were at them, won it high plenty and put pressure on them. Our goals were a bit fortunate… a free kick turned in by the slightest deflection and a penalty at last, which was obviously a foul in isolation, but that so rarely seem to be given. Maja’s penalty was emphatic. We looked in control, home and dry. But Phil Parkinson is an experienced manager who knows plenty, and he made a half time tweak to put an extra man in midfield and play through us via Lewis O’Brien - a top operator at this level. Unfortunately we got caught almost straight away… Molumby being too cavalier and getting bypassed, Price racing to cover should have done enough for us to get back but Jamma did not show the same urgency and Windass got a free hit from the edge of the box to pull one back. This may seem very harsh but I was right behind it high on the Smethwick and Griffiths had a starting position that was a couple of yards too far right. It was a decent strike but nowhere near the corner.. I think our young goalie got caught out there. Wrexham continued to come at us really quickly. They played it fast, accepting not everything would come off, but we looked lost and struggling to cope. We really needed a change but it was so early and our bench not the greatest… and as we tried to work out what to do Wrexham got a scruffy goal out of nothing, other than us looking too casual. You felt like we might really blow it so credit to Mozza and our coaches for the changes when they came. Dike for Maja meant we won more first balls and Taylor for Jamma enabled Price to go right wing, Styles left wing and our midfield 4 got that reliable hard working feel again. At the death a lovely spin and cross from Price found Dike who had to score but was denied by an instinctive save the keeper shouldn’t have been given the opportunity to make. Blackburn will be tough with some tricky decisions- goalie, right wing, up front, short turn around. Avoiding defeat is essential.
