Charlton Athletic 1 - West Bromwich Albion 0
Brendan Clegg:Another poor result. It really has to be over now... why wait any longer? A failed experiment but whatever happens from here this is just not going to work in the long term. Some eyebrows raised at the lineup but to be honest I was just happy with something different even if I couldn't see where the goals were coming from. I think we sort of played 3 at the back, then Mowatt and Diakite in front of them with Styles left, SIJ right, Grant up further left, Price in the hole and Heggebø up front. And we were on top for most of the first half if not most of the match but our finishing and decision making was chronically bad. I thought the penalty was soft but it felt like that was the only time the ball went in our box in the first half - Griffiths making a good save. At the other end we had Grant, Price and SIJ working hard and having a go but being criminally wasteful and I don't think Heggebø got a sniff of anything. Second half was more of the same and as the minutes ticked on you just felt like Maja and MJ needed a good half an hour. They didn't come on anywhere soon enough and I think Price probably spurned our best chance having done well to drive into the box... he had two options to his left for a tap-in but instead forced their keeper into what, I think, was his only save of the entire night? MJ did make it on, in the 10 role, and looked threatening (I'd like to see him here more) but there was nothing ahead of him in Heggebø - Maja got a token 10 minutes but at that point we'd take of SIJ for Gilchrist (not exactly going for it), and shunted MJ back on the left... really we had shut up shop to take a point in an absolute must-win game. I thought the sub of Mepham for Bielik, unless he was injured, was a totally bizarre thing to do that late... and their goal just was just the icing on the cake. A nothing but speculative effort and a goalkeeping howler with what was pretty much the last kick of the match. That was enough for me... I left the ground to jog back to Woolwich Wetherspoons in order to drown my sorrows, rather than stay for the boos. I thought the players did work hard, did deserve more and did battle for the travelling fans... but they are rudderless with head coach who is massively out of his depth.
It's a really crap situation to be in but then our owner and president put us in this position by appointing such a rookie. Even a win on Saturday isn't going to be enough... it will just make the whole situation even more embarrassing. Kev Buckley:View from the highlights package: Charlton 1 Albion 0 Managed to see a 10-mins highlights package that, sadly, didn't have a clock showing what happened when. Some good approach play from the Albion on show, but a combination of poor choices and poor technique meant that we hadn't put the game to bed by the time a deflection took the ball under Griffiths. Iling Junior butchered a chance but then finished off a great dribble with a great cross across the six-yard-box that no-one had made the run to get on the end of. Not to be outdone, Price dragged a good opportunity wide and also had a good run where, if he squares it to either Iling Junior or Grant, they have a tap in but, he shoots straight at the keeper. Just before the break a delivery after a free-kick saw two Albion players going for the same ball and Phillips heading wide, under pressure from his team-mate. Griffiths will be thinking he still should have saved the deflected shot but given the penalty save, albeit from a not that great penalty, and a fine stop near the end (OK, near the end of the highlights), he shouldn't be a scapegoat for the inability of those in front of him to win the game in normal time. If anything, at least compared to the last games's highlights package, we weren't limited to individuals shooting from outside the box to no great effect, so, despite the loss, that might be progress? |
