Danish striker on the way?

09 December 2003

Albion are favourites to sign former Danish Under 21 striker Morten Skoubo on loan, according to reports from a variety of sources on the Continent. Skoubo, 23 years old and just under 6'3" tall, joined German side Borussia M?nchengladbach last season for a fee of 2.2 million Euros, and promptly scored four times in their last 5 games. However, since their change of coach, he has fallen from favour and is currently playing in the reserves, and the club are said to be looking to loan him out in order to keep up his match fitness. Reports in Germany say that Skoubo (pronounced "Skoo-bo") flew to England yesterday (Monday) to join Albion for a trial period with a view to the move.

Contrary to some reports, Skoubo was not Borussia's record signing - that was Stefan Effenberg, who joined them for about 3.5 million Euros from AC Florencia and was then sold to Bayern Munich for 4.5 million Euros. Skoubo used to play for FC Midtjylland in Denmark, one of the teams faced by Albion in their Danish pre-season tour this year (we beat them 2-0), where he scored 19 league goals in the 2001/2002 season.

As reputedly one of Denmark's top strikers, he is aiming to try and win a place in the Danish squad for the European Championships next year. So far, he has made just one senior appearance for Denmark, and is under contract with Borussia until 2007 - but has publically said that he would consider a loan move back to Denmark for the rest of the season, where three top-flight clubs are said to be keenly monitoring his progress.
