Hughesie ties the knot

08 June 2000

Albion goal ace Lee Hughes was today tying the knot in a hush-hush ceremony in Croatia following a whirlwind romance. The former roofer turned £5m-rated striker was marrying air hostess Anna Kuzmanic - nine months after the couple first met. Only close family and friends were attending the blessing in Anna's home town of Trogir close to the coastal city of Split. None of Hughes' Hawthorns fellow players were present at this afternoon's church service on the historic island town off the Adriatic Sea. Speaking exclusively to the Express & Star, Hughes said:

"This is the happiest day of my life. I'm thrilled to bits. It couldn't get much better than travelling abroad to get married to Anna. It's not bad for a lad from Smethwick."

Anna, 28, met Hughes in Birmingham at the opening of the Radio Cafe in Brindleyplace last September soon after the ex-Kidderminster striker revealed his engagement to former lap dancer Donna Nisbet was off. The British Airways hostess, whose wealthy father was born in Croatia, was spotted watching her husband-to-be several times at The Hawthorns last season. They are understood to have decided to marry several weeks ago and flew out to Trogir last weekend to prepare for today's ceremony. The guest list was restricted to a select gathering which included Anna's best friend Jacqueline Gold, daughter of Birmingham City Football Club chairman David Gold. Hughes' parents were both present along with his brothers, Clint and Brett, and his agent Dale Wright. Long-time pal Steve McAndrew was best man but few of his team-mates were aware of today's events.
