Two new signings!

23 August 2006

Albion have finally added another striker to their squad with the signing of Kevin Phillips from Aston Villa for ?700,000. Phillips joined Villa from Southampton a couple of years ago, but has spent most of his career at Sunderland, who were sounding like favourites to take him back again. Thanks to Tony Fudger for digging out his full history and scoring record:

94-95 Watford 9 Goals, 16 Games
95-96 Watford 11 Goals, 27 Games
96-97 Watford 4 Goals, 16 Games
97-98 Sunderland 29 Goals, 43 Games
98-99 Sunderland 23 Goals, 26 Games
99-00 Sunderland 30 Goals, 36 Games
00-01 Sunderland 14 Goals, 34 Games
01-02 Sunderland 11 Goals, 36 Games
02-03 Sunderland 6 Goals, 32 Games
03-04 Southampton 13 Goals, 34 Games
04-05 Southampton 10 Goals, 30 Games
05-06 Aston Villa 4 Goals, 23 Games

And the other signing? This one, frankly, had us gasping with astonishment. Midfielder Jason Koumas has signed a new three year deal with Albion, "ending months of speculation about his future", as the Official Web Site put it. Considering he's not even turned up for training yet this season, and hasn't been paid anything in wages as a result, it's a miracle he even turned up to sign the deal. The official site quotes him as saying

"There's one club I want to play for, and that's West Brom."

Where has the real Jason Koumas been buried? I think we should be told.
