Hughes in Court

Hughes and his solicitor arrive at Court

Lee Hughes appeared in front of magistrates today in Coventry to answer charges of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident. He has been released on bail to appear at Coventry Crown Court on 5th December, with a number of conditions attached; he must not contact any of the witnesses to the incident, he must surrender his passport, he must continue to live in his house in Meriden, Coventry, he must not visit a couple of specified pubs in Coventry and he must report to Smethwick Police on Thursdays and Sundays and to any Police officer on request.

If convicted of causing the death, he could face a maximum sentence of 10 years. Hughes did not speak to reporters outside the court, but his solicitor, Nick Freeman, told them:

"It would be wholly inappropriate for Lee to comment on proceedings at this stage.

He extends his deepest sympathy to the family of the deceased and hopes that other persons injured have a full and speedy recovery."

Albion have issued a statement that he will resume training tomorrow (Thursday) and that the Manager will make a day-by-day assessment as to whether he should resume his playing duties.
