Commemorating Jeff Astle

31 January 2002

Albion?s shareholders and supporters groups have come together to plan a memorial to the King of the Hawthorns - the late Jeff Astle. They will be meeting in February with Albion chairman Paul Thompson and chief executive John Wile to plan an appropriate tribute to the Albion hero who died suddenly on 19th January.

Grorty Dick fanzine editor Simon Wright said that ?Everyone wants a permanent Astle memorial: supporters and, naturally, the Astle family. Club officials are not unsympathetic. But what form will this take? There are lots of ideas, many of them fine but what we need is a unified approach not ?Fan A demands this? or ?Fan B demands this.?

Shareholders for Albion vice chairman, Bryn Jones said ?S4A contacted board representatives about a joint approach last week. We feel that the club needs a clear plan to commemorate Jeff?s memory. By working together shareholders, supporters and the board should be able to devise a tribute to ?the King? that also enables other Albion legends to be commemorated in an appropriate way when the time comes.?

Albion Supporters? Club secretary Alan Cleverley commented: ?When we have a clearer idea of the kind of tribute that will be appropriate and practical, ordinary supporters can send suggestions into the Supporters Club via the main branch address which is listed in the Albion programme.?

If you have any ideas you'd like to suggest for the discussions, please send them to Bryn Jones at shareholders@baggies.com or Simon Wright at swd10631@blueyonder.co.uk
